Draft 2019 ABDC Journal Quality List

The Australian Business Deans Council published the draft 2019 ABDC Journal Quality List on 13 September, and removed it after becoming aware of a technical issue in the online data base that meant in a handful of cases the draft list did not reflect the recommendations of the panels. The draft list is now available, and the consultation period will correspondingly be extended one week, until Friday 18 October.

The ABDC is fully committed to a transparent rankings and consultation process for the 2019 Journal Ranking exercise — details of which are provided on the ABDC website — and encourages stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft list through the online process. This includes any feedback on anomalies or errors in the draft list.

The ABDC asks that all feedback on the draft list be delivered via the online form below. Feedback submitted by email will not be considered by the review panels.

2019 ABDC Journal Quality List review

In April, the ABDC announced the chairs of the eight panels that will rank academic journals in its major 2019 Journal Quality List Review. Information about the panel chairs and panellists is detailed below.

The List, which was established in 2007, is used as a guide by business schools around the world to assess the quality of the journals in which faculty members’ research is published.

The List is significant because the status of researchers’ work, their career advancement and the international rankings of universities are closely tied to publication and citations in quality academic journals.

The last full review of the ABDC List was conducted in 2013, followed by an interim review in 2016.

ACCOUNTING (covering journals across 1501)

Professor Gary Monroe, University of New South Wales

Gary Monroe is a Life Member and past President of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand. He serves on the Editorial Boards of a number of international journals. He is the current Chair of the ASB Ethics Panel. Prior to taking up his appointment at UNSW, Gary worked at the Australian National University, Edith Cowan University, University of Western Australia, University of Hawaii, Duke University and the University of Massachusetts. He has taught financial and management accounting, auditing, accounting information systems, behavioural research in accounting and research methods at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Professor Monroe is an internationally renowned researcher in auditing with an emphasis on audit judgment and the economics of auditing, and financial reporting.

Professor Julie-Anne Tarr, Queensland University of Technology

Professor Tarr has a diverse background in commercial and business law, corporate administration and not-for-profit change management. She has previously held senior appointments in the United States, Australia (where she has taught at Monash, Bond and University of Queensland) and the University of the South Pacific. Julie-Anne has served as the General Manager, CEO or Director of a range of organisations including the Queensland Institute of Medical Research; Indiana University’s International Programs Office; USP Solutions (the private commercial arm of the University of the South Pacific); and the Litigation Reform Commission (Qld). She has written six books and a range of articles in the insurance, risk management and commercial practices areas, and has held a number of Board appointments and worked extensively as a consultant in the private commercial sector.

Professor James Morley, University of Sydney

James Morley was appointed as Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Sydney in 2017 and is Co-Director of the Global Perspectives on Economic Policy initiative for the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. He received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1999 and previously held positions at Washington University in St. Louis and the University of New South Wales, most recently as Associate Dean (Research) of the UNSW Business School from 2014-2017. James’ research focuses on the empirical analysis of business cycles, stabilisation policy, and sources of persistent changes in macroeconomic and financial conditions.

Professor Stephen Taylor, University of Technology Sydney

Stephen Taylor is UTS Distinguished Professor of Accounting at the University of Technology Sydney and is also a member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. During 2016-17, Stephen served as the inaugural Australian Business Deans’ Council (ABDC) Research Scholar, a position focused on improving the quality and impact of research in Australian business schools, as well as research training. From 2009 to 2015, Stephen was Associate Dean-Research in the UTS Business School. From 2012 to 2015, Stephen also served as Chair of BARDsNet, the ABDC network of Australian and New Zealand business ADRs. Stephen was a member of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) panel for Economics and Business for the 2015 and 2018 assessments.

Professor Deborah Bunker, University of Sydney

Professor Deborah Bunker is a leading international scholar in organisational collaboration and change management in complex organisational and environmental settings. She is a member of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage funded, Human Health and Social Impacts Node, which is hosted at the University of Sydney. Deborah is also Chair and Convener of the Interoperability in Extreme Events Research Group and Chair of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 8.6 (Transfer and Diffusion of IT). Professor Bunker is a Multi-Disciplinary Advisory Board Member of the Marie Bashir Institute (MBI) at the University of Sydney.

Professor Ingrid Nielsen, Monash University

Ingrid Nielsen is Head of the Department of Management at Monash University. She was formerly Alfred Deakin Professor of Management and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Performance) at Deakin University. Ingrid is an appointed Research Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management and an appointed Business Management Specialist in the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.She holds a current ARC Discovery Grant and her research has received funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Health and Human Services, Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and the Data to Decisions CRC.

Professor Sara Dolnicar, University of Queensland

Sara Dolnicar holds a Masters and PhD degree from the Vienna University of Economics and Business and a Masters degree in Psychology at the University of Vienna. Sara’s core research interests are the improvement of market segmentation methodology and the testing and refinement of measures used in social science research. To date, Sara has (co-)authored more than 300 refereed papers, including more than 160 journal articles and led more than a dozen Australian Research Council (ARC) grants. In 2011, she took up a prestigious ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship. She won more than 30 awards, including two prestigious lifetime achievement awards: The US-based Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) Distinguished Researcher Award (2017) for ground-breaking research that positively impacts the tourism industry, and outstanding service to the tourism research community.

Journal Quality List History

Establishment

In 2007, ABDC established the ABDC Journal Quality List for use by its member business schools. Most universities adapt the list to suit individual university requirements.

The initial list aimed to overcome the regional and discipline bias of international lists.  An independent chair and discipline-specific panels reviewed the ABDC Journal Quality List in 2013 and 2009.

2013 Full Review

The ABDC Journal Quality List 2013 comprised 2,767 different journal titles, divided into four categories of quality: 

  • A* 6.9%
  • A   20.8%
  • B   28.4%
  • C   43.9%.

In each Field of Research (FoR) group, journals deemed NOT to reach the quality threshold level are not listed.

2016 Interim Review

In 2016, ABDC produced a revised list from an interim review that narrowly focused on:

  • New journals started since 1 January 2011
  • Removal of predatory open-access journal
  • Change of Field of Research (FoR) grouping
  • Incorrect factual details

2018 Methodology Review

Early last year the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) appointed Australian and international experts to review the methodology for the ABDC Journal Quality List.

After taking into account the expert review and feedback from BARDsNet, the ABDC endorsed the following methodology:

1. Journal quality ratings should be validated by expert panels. The panels should be informed by globally recognised and externally validated journal ranking lists[1], appropriate and select citation metrics (e.g. SCImago) and, if required, expert peer review.

2. The following criteria must be met by each journal in the ABDC Journal Quality List. A journal must:

  • Have reached the necessary quality threshold level, as determined by the expert panel using globally accepted, externally validated journal ranking lists, journal citation metrics and expert peer review
  • Adhere to general scholarly principles, including scholarly peer review
  • Be relevant to the discipline areas of the ABDC, which include management, accounting, economics, information systems, business and taxation law and other agreed Fields of Research (FoRs)
  • Not be a predatory journal.

3. An indicator for journals of regional significance should not be incorporated against relevant journals in the ABDC Journal List.

4. A new quality category (e.g. A**) should not be added to the ABDC Journal List to recognise world elite journals deemed to be the best in the world.

5. Members of the expert panels, including the Panel Chair, should be selected through a formal call for Expressions of Interest. The processes will be similar to those used by the Australian Research Council for panel selection.

  • The ABDC will provide appropriate levels of administrative support so panel members should not expect to make significant time commitments to the Journal Quality List Review. Administration will include a Research Assistant to support gathering data on each journal
  • There should be between five and eight expert panels as the panels do not need to mirror the FORs
  • The size of each panel should reflect the number and size of the disciplines represented on it
  • Where possible, panels should be representative and reflect expertise in terms of gender, institutional affiliation and geographic location.

6. More explicit and rigorous processes for the ranking of journals should be developed and reported.

  • Note: Terms of Reference for each of the expert panels should be developed by ABDC’s Business Research Deans’ Network, BARDsNet, and then approved by the ABDC Executive.
